What is a Full Body Massage?

What is a Full Body Massage?

A full body massage is a therapeutic treatment that works the body's main muscle groups, including the back, shoulders, neck, arms, hands, legs, and feet. Instead of focusing on one spot the therapist massages the whole body. It works to loosen muscle tension, stimulate blood flow, and create deep muscle relaxation throughout the body.

What Happens During a Full Body Massage?

Our massage therapist will ask a few questions about your goals, any tight spots, and areas you'd like them to focus on or avoid. You can mention what kind of pressure you'd like (e.g., light, medium, or firm). After your assessment, you'll have privacy to undress to your comfort level, and then lay on the massage table. Many people start face down, then turn over partway through. You'll stay covered with a sheet or towel during the massage, and only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time. This technique is called massage draping, and is used to keep you comfortable and warm.

During the massage, your therapist applies oil or lotion so their hands can easily work each area using a mix of strokes and your preferred amount of pressure. The room is often dim and quiet, sometimes with soft music, to help you unwind.

Full body massage sessions usually include:

  • Back and shoulders⎯Often a key focus area, especially for stress and posture-related tightness.

  • Neck⎯This helps relax tight muscles in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, which can reduce stiffness and improve range of motion

  • Arms and handsMassaging the arms and hands helps by release tension in muscles that are constantly used for typing, gripping, and repetitive daily tasks.

  • Legs and feetMassaging the legs and feet is important for circulation and fatigue relief.

  • Scalp work⎯Often incorporated in relaxation massage treatments.

  • Facial⎯A facial can be combined with a body massage for enhanced relaxation and renewal.

Types of Full Body Massage Treatments

A full body massage can be customized depending on your needs. Types of full body massage treatments include:

Swedish Massage

A Swedish massage is a gentle, full-body massage where the therapist uses long, flowing strokes, kneading, and circular movements to relax muscles, improve circulation, and reduce stress.

Deep Tissue Massage

A deep tissue massage uses slow, focused pressure to reach deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It helps release chronic tension, break up knots, and improve mobility, so this type of massage is really good for persistent muscle pain or stiffness.

Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage uses smooth, heated stones placed on and moved across the body to warm tight muscles and encourage deep relaxation. The heat helps improve circulation, ease muscle tension, and helps with stress and pain relief.

If you’re not sure which type of massage you should get, let your therapist know your goals so they can discuss the best options.
