Lip Filler Aftercare: Do's and Don'ts

Lip Filler Aftercare: Do's and Don'ts

Lip filler can enhance your smile, restore volume, and boost confidence, but proper aftercare is crucial for achieving the best results and minimizing side effects. Proper lip filler aftercare helps you minimize swelling, prevent severe bruising, and avoid unwanted complications. If you want your lips to heal beautifully and maintain their shape, knowing the do’s and don’ts in the days after your treatment is important.

What to Expect After Lip Filler

Right after getting fillers, your lips will likely feel sensitive. To help minimize bruising and swelling, it’s helpful to start preparing a few days before your appointment by staying hydrated, eating beforehand, avoiding alcohol for 2–3 days, and skipping same-day caffeine or NSAIDs. Some patients also take arnica or allergy medication 3–5 days before and after treatment to reduce bruising. Some of common side effects of lip fillers are:

  • Swelling⎯Swelling is the most common reaction to lip filler. Your lips may look larger or slightly uneven during the first few days as the filler settles and the tissue reacts to the injections.
  • Bruising⎯Mild bruising at the injection sites is completely normal.
  • Tenderness⎯Your lips might feel sore, tight, or slightly hard to the touch. It’s also common to experience dryness or flaking as they heal, so we recommend following proper lip aftercare to keep them hydrated and comfortable.

These symptoms usually peak on the second day and gradually subside over the next two weeks. It’s important to follow your aftercare instructions so you heal properly.

Lip Filler Aftercare Do’s

To ensure you heal probably, follow these best practices.

Sleep with Your Head Elevated

Gravity can cause fluids to pool in your face overnight which could cause more swelling. For the first few nights after lip filler injections, sleeping on your back with your head elevated to help the fluid drain away from your face so there’s minimal swelling in the morning.

Eat Soft Foods

For the first 24 hours, stick to foods that are easy to eat with utensils and won’t touch your lips—avoid messy sandwiches or anything that requires biting directly. Skip straws, too, to keep your lips comfortable.

Keep Your Lips Clean

Infection is rare, but because lip fillers break the skin barrier, it’s something to be aware of—especially within the first four hours post-injection. Always wash your hands before touching your face. Gently cleanse your face with a mild cleanser, then pat your skin dry using a clean towel. Shop recommended cleansers.

Lip Filler Aftercare Don’ts

Knowing what not to do is as important as knowing what to do. Skip these things after getting lip filler.

Avoid Ice

Although it may seem soothing, applying ice to your lips can introduce bacteria and increase the risk of infection. It can also affect how the filler settles and integrates into your tissue, potentially impacting the final results. For these reasons, it’s best to avoid ice entirely.

Go To The Gym Immediately

Strenuous workouts increase blood flow to your face, which can worsen swelling and bruising after treatment. Avoid heavy lifting, intense cardio, and high-impact workouts for at least 48 hours after lip injections. If you want to still exercise, stick to light walking or weightlifting.

Avoid Extreme Heat

High temperatures cause your blood vessels to expand, which can prolong swelling. For the first 48 hours, don’t use saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and tanning beds. Also take lukewarm showers or baths rather than hot ones.

Use Makeup & Lip Products

Each injection site is essentially a minor, temporary wound. so it’s best to give your lip area a little time before applying skincare, makeup, and lip products. When you do start using lip care or makeup, choose items approved for aftercare, always use a fresh, new tube, and make sure brushes or applicators are clean. Explore our recommended lip products for aftercare.

Skip Straws

Puckering your lips to drink through a straw puts pressure on your freshly injected lips. This movement can cause the filler to shift before it fully settles into your tissue. Drink directly from a cup for the first few days to keep your filler exactly where it was injected.

Avoid Alcohol & Caffeine

Alcohol and caffeine can act as a vasodilator, meaning they may widen your blood vessels and increase the likelihood of bruising. For best results, avoid alcohol for a few days before your treatment and limit caffeine on the day of your appointment. It’s best to avoid both for 24 hours before and after your lip filler treatment.

How to Make Lip Fillers Last Longer

After the first few weeks of healing, you’ll have beautiful, plump lips. Here’s how you can make your lip fillers last as long as possible:

  • Stay Hydrated ⎯ Drinking plenty of water helps maintain overall skin health and supports longer-lasting results.
  • Avoid Sleeping on Your Face ⎯ Try to sleep on your back, especially early on, to prevent unnecessary pressure on your lips.
  • Moisturize Daily⎯Keep your lips soft and hydrated with a nourishing lip treatment, enhancer, or balm.
  • Follow-Up Appointments⎯Lip filler is often built gradually. Many patients return 1–2 months after their initial treatment for a subtle enhancement, helping avoid overfilling or migration. After that, maintenance is typically needed every 6–12 months.
